Drawing lots of different space ships can either be tons of fun, or an absolute pain in the butt. There is no in between.

I remember making the mistake of having a spaceship which resembled the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Everything else looked like tubes and dishes, the FSM ship took me twice as long to draw and didn’t look half as good.
Aw dang! lol. Ships are tough!
Betting they knew she was sentient, and they are keeping things from their researchers so they don’t realize they are the bad guys.
Ooh. I love a good fan theory! Though I’ll counter you with this: why give an intelligent life form to scientists if they didn’t want the scientists to know how intelligent it is? I like your thinking, though! 😉
So you have intel on the species in local space without appearing hostile. Plausible deniability. Hand it over to the science department, hand wave and claim “we didn’t know” if the species in question is in a position to protest. Both learn the limitations of the race and avoid any hostilities that might arise from kidnapping intelligent life for evaluation. It’s how I would do it if I were a budding empire not in a position for a full blown war of conquest. Especially in a technocrasy like the Auriks.
Nicely thought out! I won’t spoil anything by confirming or denying, of course, but you’ve got an awesome idea there.
